Yes. Barcelona's tap water is treated, disinfected and controlled under Spanish law, and the latest official bulletins rate it fit to drink. Some residents don't like the taste. Here is why, what the official numbers say, and the honest pros and cons of each option.

Two of the options below: a bottled-water dispenser (left) and an under-sink reverse osmosis unit (right).
There is no single right answer. It depends on whether the taste bothers you, how much limescale you put up with, whether you rent, and how much effort you want to spend. The tap water itself is safe whichever you choose.
Safe and legally controlled. The cheapest option, with no plastic and no effort.
Some people dislike the taste of the disinfectant or the minerals. In hard-water zones, kettles and taps scale up.
Cheap to start, no installation, fine for renters.
Cartridges need regular replacement and the jug holds little. What a cartridge reduces varies by brand, so check its specifications.
Filtered water straight from a faucet, with nothing to carry or store. Reduces the minerals that cause hardness; Oasly remineralises afterwards and has been tested by SGS.
Needs installation: cold-water feed and drain under the sink, usually a hole for a dedicated faucet. Renters must ask the landlord. Oasly costs €24.90 every 4 weeks in Barcelona city.
No setup, and the label tells you the mineral content.
Carrying heavy packs home, plastic waste and an ongoing cost.
No installation and no carrying: 20-litre bottles delivered, typically every 4 weeks (OCU, June 2025)
A dispenser on the floor, which OCU measured using about twice the electricity of a fridge. Prices are usually quoted on request rather than published.
Delivery terms vary by provider; the OCU findings refer to the service it reviewed. Oasly figures are our own published prices. Whatever you choose, Barcelona's tap water meets Spanish drinking-water law.
Yes. Drinking water in Spain has to meet Real Decreto 3/2023, and the latest bulletins in SINAC, the Ministry of Health's drinking-water database (read on 9 October 2026), say "agua apta para el consumo" (fit to drink) for all three of Barcelona's supply zones.
Usually for two reasons. It is disinfected so it stays safe through the pipes, and some people notice that taste or smell. And in most of the city it is hard: it carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium, which affects the taste. Neither is a safety problem.
SINAC reports by supply zone, not by neighbourhood. Latest values: Barcelona Zona D, which serves 72% of the population, 32.9 °f (hard); Zona B 28.4 °f and Zona E 18.6 °f (moderately hard). Nearby: L'Hospitalet 40.0 °f (hard), Esplugues 26.6 °f and Sant Cugat 17.4 °f (moderately hard), Badalona 10.8 °f (soft). Our water hardness page has the dates and sources.
Not necessarily. Tap water is controlled and it is the cheapest option. The Spanish consumer organisation OCU concluded that tap water is the best option where its quality is adequate. Bottled water comes down to taste and convenience, with plastic and cost as the trade-off.
Not for safety. A filter is about taste, limescale and convenience. If you just want water that tastes better, with no commitment, a jug filter is the easy start. If you drink a lot of water and are tired of carrying bottles, under-sink reverse osmosis is worth a look.
A jug filter is cheap to buy, plus replacement cartridges. Under-sink reverse osmosis is either bought or rented. Oasly costs €24.90 every 4 weeks (about €0.88 a day) or €249 a year in Barcelona city; €27.90 or €279 a year in Badalona, L'Hospitalet, Sant Cugat and Esplugues; or €699 installed if you buy it. Subscriptions include installation, filters and maintenance.
Often yes, with your landlord's permission. The unit connects to the cold-water feed and the drain under the sink, and usually needs a dedicated faucet, which means a hole in the worktop or sink. A 3-way faucet is an option if drilling is not allowed. Oasly has no minimum term; you cancel with two months' written notice.
Keep it short and specific. Say what will be installed (a compact unit inside the sink cabinet), what it connects to (the cold-water feed and the drain), whether it needs a hole for a faucet or you would use a 3-way faucet instead, and that the unit can be removed when you move out. Ask for the OK in writing; an email or a WhatsApp message is enough.
According to Aigües de Barcelona's 2024 operating report, 59.5% of the water it supplied was its own production: Llobregat river water treated at Sant Joan Despí, plus groundwater. The other 40.5% was bought from ATL, which covers Ter river water from the Sau and Susqueda reservoirs, Llobregat water treated at Abrera, and the Llobregat desalination plant.
It leaves limescale: the white crust inside kettles and around taps. It is harmless, but it builds up, so descale your appliances regularly following the manufacturer's instructions. A drinking-water filter only helps with the water that goes through it.
